What are the core requirements for naturalisation as a Thai citizen?

Section 10 of the Nationality Act B.E. 2508 (1965) requires the applicant to be sui juris under both Thai law and the law of their nationality, to be of good behaviour, to have a regular occupation, to have had a domicile in Thailand for at least five consecutive years up to the filing date, and to have knowledge of the Thai language. Because that domicile is counted from permanent residence, PR normally precedes citizenship.

When can applications be filed, and is there a quota?

The Immigration Bureau opens PR applications only during a window announced each year, not continuously. Section 40 of the Immigration Act provides for an annual quota of foreigners per nationality set by Ministry of Interior announcement. Because the window is short, translations and consular legalisation should be completed in advance.

Why do name discrepancies matter so much in nationality cases?
