Verify directly with the country's official authority before committing, and treat any promise of guaranteed approval as a red flag — no agent can give that.

How do I choose the right visa category?

Start from what you will actually do, not from whichever visa is easiest to obtain, because carrying out activities outside the granted category can breach the conditions of stay. Then settle three questions: how long you need to remain, whether you will work or receive payment, and whether dependants travel with you. What retirement visa options does Thailand offer?

The main route is the Non-Immigrant O-A (Long Stay) visa for applicants aged 50 or over, which requires financial evidence, a police clearance certificate and a medical certificate as specified by the issuing post. There is also the Non-Immigrant O-X long-stay visa, open only to nationals of the countries listed in the relevant notification. Permission to stay after arrival is a separate decision by the Immigration Bureau, with its own reporting and financial conditions.

How recent must a police clearance certificate be for a long-stay visa?

Most receiving authorities require the criminal record check to have been issued within three to six months of filing. A certificate issued by the Royal Thai Police must additionally be translated, legalized by the Department of Consular Affairs and, in many cases, endorsed by the destination embassy in Thailand — so allow time for all three steps before your appointment date.

Does holding a long-stay privilege programme allow me to work?

Not by itself. Permission to stay and permission to work are governed by separate regimes: stay by the Immigration Bureau, work by the Department of Employment under the foreigners' working management law.
