Documents required for PAN-Aadhaar Linking & Compliance

Applications are rejected far more often on identity and address evidence than on the form itself.

  • Passport bio-data page, attested in the manner the receiving agency specifies
  • Address proof in the applicant's name, matching the passport spelling and within the accepted age
  • Photographs to the form's exact specification — wrong size or background is a frequent rejection
  • Signature strictly inside the box; strokes crossing the border scan as incomplete data

Legalization in Thailand before dispatch

  • Thai-issued documents are translated into English and the translation certified first
  • Then MFA legalization, followed by the Indian Embassy or the Apostille route as the receiving agency requires
  • Name spelling must be identical across every document, including middle-name order
  • Keep one full legalized set — some filing channels do not return documents

What the PAN is used for (Reactivating an inoperative PAN due to missing Aadhaar link and Filing ITR-2 for NRIs with India-sourced income)

  • Indian financial and investment transactions that require a tax identification number
  • Avoiding the higher withholding rate applied to payees without a PAN
  • Account opening and contracting with Indian counterparties
  • Filing Indian returns where India-sourced income arises

Frequently asked questions

Does PAN-Aadhaar Linking & Compliance require travelling to India?

No. The application is filed from Thailand through the authorised agency's online channel, with the legalized document set couriered to the address specified. The work that must happen locally is the translation and legalization chain, completed before dispatch.

How long until the PAN is issued?

With a clean document set, the time is driven by the agency's verification and international delivery. The controllable part is the Thai side, where translation and legalization run in parallel. The most common delay is a first-round rejection, not the agency queue.

My passport has no separate surname — how do I complete the form?

The form requires a surname field. Where the passport shows a single name, that name goes in the surname field and the given-name field follows the agency's single-name convention. Reversing them produces a card that no longer matches the passport, affecting every later transaction.

I already hold a PAN with wrong details — new application or correction?

File a correction, never a new application. Holding more than one PAN is an offence under Indian tax law and carries a penalty. If a duplicate was issued unintentionally, the surplus number must be surrendered with an explanation.

Is Aadhaar linking required?

The linking requirement primarily applies to those eligible to hold Aadhaar. Foreign nationals who are not eligible fall outside it. Linking status nevertheless affects filing and withholding, so verify your own status before any large transaction.
