Does Thailand have a Notary Public?
Not in the common-law sense. Thailand uses Notarial Services Attorneys registered under the Lawyers Council of Thailand regulations. In practice their certification is accepted in place of a notary for documents going abroad, and is usually followed by MFA legalization and endorsement at the destination embassy, depending on what the receiving authority demands.
How do I confirm my documents were received and are progressing?
Ask for a receipt listing each document, the number of copies, the date and the person receiving them, and ask every status update to state three things: current stage, next stage, and what is awaited from you. I already live overseas — how can Thai documents be handled for me?
You can appoint a representative in Thailand. The power of attorney must be signed before an officer of the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate-General in your country of residence, then couriered to Thailand in original. Where fresh civil-registry extracts are needed, the attorney-in-fact can request them at the district registrar under Department of Provincial Administration rules.
How do government office hours affect turnaround?
Legalization and embassy submissions only happen during each authority's official working days, and every embassy keeps its own holiday calendar. Turnaround is therefore counted in business days — check the destination authority's official holiday list before planning travel.
Can Thai documents be apostilled?
The Hague Apostille Convention does not take effect for Thailand until 28 February 2027 (instrument of accession deposited 30 June 2026). Until then, Thai documents used abroad follow the certified translation → MFA legalization → destination embassy endorsement route, according to the receiving institution's requirements.

Check whether the destination is an Apostille Convention party
For member states the chain ends with an apostille and no embassy step is needed. For non-member states the document must continue through the destination country's embassy. Verify the current member list on the HCCH website.
Get the receiving party's requirements in writing
Universities, employers and registry offices publish their own checklists. Obtaining that checklist first fixes the number of copies, the language and the certification route correctly on the first attempt.
Prepare translations in the format the certifying office actually uses
The Department of Consular Affairs certifies translations presented in its expected format. Self-formatted translations are frequently sent back for correction, costing a full queue cycle.
Separate public documents from private ones
Public records such as house registration, birth and marriage certificates enter the certification chain directly. Private documents such as powers of attorney, affidavits and contracts must first be attested by a Notarial Services Attorney.
