Criminal record checks: advice and cautions
Confirm the exact certificate type required
Some destinations require a personal police clearance certificate, others require the destination country and purpose printed on it. Requesting the wrong format means starting the cycle again.
Plan the downstream steps
Police certificates usually need translation and further certification such as consular certification, apostille or embassy legalization. Budget for the whole chain.
Take fingerprints on the accepted form
Applicants abroad must use a fingerprint form accepted by the Thai authority, endorsed by a competent local body. Check the current form before printing.
Time the validity to the filing date
Receiving authorities usually require the certificate to have been issued within a set window before submission. Aim for it to still be valid when the case is assessed, not just when it is issued.
Treating it as a guarantee
The certificate reports what the authority's database holds at the time of the check. It is not a guarantee of any decision by the receiving authority.
Forgetting other countries of residence
Many visa systems require clearances from every country where you lived beyond a set period, not only your country of nationality.
Omitting destination country and purpose
Many receiving authorities accept only certificates naming the destination and purpose matching the application. A generic certificate can be refused.
Requesting the certificate too early
A certificate issued long before filing may fall outside the destination's validity window and have to be reordered.
