How are medical records handled confidentially?
Health information is sensitive personal data under Thailand's personal data protection law, so records should move only with the patient's documented consent and to the recipients that consent identifies. Translators handling such files work under confidentiality obligations, return or destroy working copies, and avoid transmitting records through channels that keep uncontrolled copies.
How long is a medical certificate valid?
Validity is set by the receiving party — embassy, employer or institution — not by the translator. Confirm their limit before starting, so the document does not expire while in queue.
How are hospital records obtained in Thailand for use abroad?
The patient or an authorised representative applies to the hospital's medical records unit with identity documents and, where relevant, a power of attorney. The hospital issues copies certified by an authorised officer, which can take several working days because the treating physician's approval is often required. The certified set is then translated and legalised as the destination requires. Request the complete set at once — discharge summary, laboratory results and medication list — to avoid a second application later.
Can a diagnosis be summarised or simplified in translation?
No. Diagnoses, medication names, dosages, ICD codes and measurement units are reproduced exactly, with the original Thai retained where a term has no established equivalent. Summarising creates clinical risk and undermines the certification. Where the source is handwritten and unclear, the correct response is to ask the issuing institution for clarification, not to interpret it.
What do insurers usually require?
Typically a medical summary, itemised bills and receipts with translations; some insurers specify translator qualifications. Ask your insurer for their checklist first.
What is required to use a Thai medical certificate abroad?
Obtain the certificate from a licensed physician with the hospital's seal, translate it into the required language, legalise it at the Department of Consular Affairs, and add embassy attestation if the destination requires it.
Which Thai medical documents usually need legalisation for use abroad?
Most often: medical certificates for visa or insurance purposes, vaccination records, treatment summaries, fit-to-fly or fit-to-work letters, and hospital invoices supporting an insurance claim. The document must normally be signed by a licensed physician and carry the hospital's stamp before it can be translated and submitted to the Department of Consular Affairs (consular.mfa.go.th). Photocopies without an original signature are typically refused.
