How long does a legalised document remain usable?
Consular legalisation does not itself carry an expiry date; the receiving authority decides how recently a document must have been issued or certified. In practice many authorities apply short windows to civil-status documents such as single-status certificates, house registration extracts and police certificates. Sequence the work so that certification finishes close to the actual filing date rather than months in advance, and where the position is unclear, ask the receiving authority in writing before starting.
Which documents are accepted as originals for legalisation?
Generally documents issued by a Thai government office bearing an original signature and seal, or certified true copies issued by that office. Plain photocopies, scans and reprints are typically refused. Where the original must be retained, the issuing office can usually provide an additional certified copy, which is the safer route than submitting a copy certified by a third party.
Does the express channel change the review standard?
No. Express affects only the processing window and the official fee schedule published by the Department of Consular Affairs. Incomplete files or inaccurate translations are returned on either channel, so speed only helps once the dossier is already complete.
How long do legalised documents stay valid?
The stamp has no expiry, but receiving authorities frequently require the underlying certificate — single status, company affidavit, police clearance — to have been issued within three to six months of submission.
Is legalisation enough for use abroad?

Translations should be laid out so each page maps clearly to the original, and the translator's certificate should state the total page count. Missing pages, seals cropped at the edge of a scan and pages out of order are the most common reasons a file is returned, so count pages and check the legibility of every seal before submission.
Can I submit a document legalised years ago for a new application?
The legalisation stamp itself does not expire, but the receiving authority usually applies a recency rule to the underlying document — for example, a civil registration extract issued within a set number of months. In practice this means old legalised sets often have to be redone from a fresh extract. Confirm the recipient's rule before assuming a previous set can be reused.

Where is document legalisation done in Thailand?
Legalisation is handled by the Legalization Division, Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, whose main office is on Chaeng Watthana Road, plus selected regional passport offices that accept legalisation under the department's announcements. If travelling there is inconvenient, we collect and submit on your behalf from Lat Phrao 95, Khon Kaen and Udon Thani.
Can I submit it myself instead of using an agent?
Yes. The Department of Consular Affairs accepts walk-in and online-booked submissions from the public. The practical risk is sequence and format: official documents must be the issuing authority's version, then translated and certified in the correct order, or they are returned. An agent mainly saves repeat trips and pre-checks the format.
What do I need to bring for legalisation?

Keep a scanned backup at every stage
