Does a power of attorney signed abroad work in Thailand without further steps?
Usually not on its own. A document executed abroad is normally expected to carry authentication from the country of origin, an apostille where that country is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention or consular legalisation where it is not, and then a Thai translation. Depending on the receiving authority, the translation may additionally require certification through the Department of Consular Affairs (consular.mfa.go.th). Because the receiving office decides what it accepts, confirm the exact chain with that office before executing the document abroad.
Who can certify my signature in Thailand?
A Thai lawyer registered as a notarial services attorney with the Lawyers Council under the B.E. 2551 regulation. You must sign in person before that lawyer with original identification. The certification covers the signing, not the truth of the contents.
Who may sign as a witness on a Thai power of attorney?
Thai practice usually expects two witnesses of legal age who are not parties to the transaction and not the appointed agent. Some offices additionally require the witnesses' identification numbers on the form, and land transactions may require the witnesses to attend. Because the prescribed form differs by office, use the form that the receiving office publishes rather than a generic template.
What should a power of attorney state?
Full identification of both parties, an itemised and specific scope, the validity period, whether sub-delegation is allowed, and the reference numbers of the transaction. Broad wording is frequently rejected by receiving offices and increases the risk of misuse.
Can I draft my own, or must I use an official form?
Some Thai offices — notably land and certain registry matters — mandate their own form. Where no form is mandated you may draft one, but confirm the wording with the receiving party before signing.
Can one power of attorney cover several unrelated transactions?
Technically yes, but in practice Thai offices often prefer a separate instrument per matter. Land offices, the Department of Business Development and banks each read the authority clause narrowly and may refuse an act they consider outside the wording. A broad omnibus document also raises risk for the grantor. The safer pattern is one instrument per transaction, with the acts, the property or company, and the agent's identity spelled out.
How long does a power of attorney stay valid?
Thai law sets no general expiry, but receiving offices frequently impose their own limit on how recently it was signed. For long-running matters, state an end date in the document itself.
Can one power of attorney cover several matters?
Legally yes, but in practice many Thai offices retain the original for their file, so a single instrument cannot travel between agencies. It is safer to issue separate instruments per task with narrowly drafted authority. That reduces rejections and limits exposure if the document is used beyond your intention. If the matter needs repeated filings, sign enough counterparts at the outset — obtaining further signatures from abroad is the slowest part of the process.

Where can I find a notary public near me in Thailand?
Thailand has no US/UK-style notary public. The authorised signatory is a “Notarial Services Attorney” licensed by the Lawyers Council of Thailand under Royal Patronage, so the work must be done at a firm with such a licensed lawyer. Can I notarise a document myself without a firm?
No. Only a lawyer holding the Lawyers Council notarial-services licence may certify. What you can prepare yourself is the paperwork: the correct original or true copy, and your ID. Signature certification requires you to sign in front of the attorney, so do not sign the document in advance.
Which documents do I need to bring for notarisation?
