NAATI-certified translation: what to prepare and what gets rejected
Send full-page colour scans, front and back
Scan at 300 dpi or better so seals, signatures, document numbers and reverse-side text are legible. Anything unreadable must be marked as illegible in the translation, which commonly triggers a request for further documents.
Plan ahead if the document will also be used in Thailand or a third country
A NAATI translation is not legalisation. Use in Thailand or a third country may still require translation certification or authentication under that authority's rules. Ask our team by phone, LINE or email to sequence the steps first.
Confirm the receiving authority actually requires NAATI
NAATI is Australia's credentialing system for translators and interpreters and is mainly relevant to Australian authorities — visas, qualification assessment and professional registration. Other countries use their own systems, so verify the requirement before ordering.
Tell us whether the translation is produced inside or outside Australia
The Department of Home Affairs applies different rules: translations made in Australia must be done by a NAATI-certified translator, while translations made outside Australia must show the translator's full name, address, telephone number and qualifications on the translation.
Submitting a translation whose certification has lapsed
NAATI certification is subject to recertification cycles. If the stamp's expiry date falls before your lodgement date, the authority may refuse the translation — always check the date on the stamp.
Assuming NAATI replaces legalisation
NAATI certifies the translator's credential, not the document. Where the destination also requires consular authentication, that is a separate step.
Reusing an old translation after the source was reissued
If the original has been reissued or amended, the earlier translation no longer matches what you lodge. Always translate the exact version you will submit.
Name mismatch across the document set
If the name on the translation does not match the passport or other documents in the same application, the authority will ask for linking evidence such as a change-of-name certificate.
