The decision system used here

• Legal frame: the Visa Code (EU Regulation 810/2009) governs short stays across all Schengen states.
• Biometrics are stored in VIS and reusable for 59 months, so repeat applicants often skip re-enrolment.
• EES records entries and exits digitally in place of stamps; ETIAS is a travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationals and does not replace a visa for Thai passport holders.
• Long stays over 90 days use national (D) visas governed by each country's own law, not the Schengen rules.
• The UK and Ireland are outside Schengen and require separate applications under separate systems.

Documents scrutinised most closely

1. 1Travel insurance of at least EUR 30,000 covering every day in the Schengen area plus repatriation.
2. 2Accommodation and transport evidence matching the declared dates day by day.
3. 3Three to six months of bank statements showing steady flow, not a single deposit made before filing.
4. 4Employment letter stating role, salary, length of service and approved leave dates.
5. 5If hosted: the destination's own sponsorship form, e.g. Germany's Verpflichtungserklärung or France's attestation d'accueil.

Where applications usually fail

• Filing with the wrong state — booking a flight into one country but staying longer in another — leads to refusal for lack of competence.
• Miscounting the 90/180 rule, especially for frequent travellers who forget earlier trips.
• Insurance that stops before the last day or falls below the threshold.
• Large deposits landing days before filing with no explanation of source of funds.
• Uncertified translations where the consulate requires certified ones.
